7. 11th February 1949
This photograph by my father, is of my mother on the day that I was born, and I am naturally very fond of it. When the contractions temporarily abated, my mother, who has always been a keen film buff, discharged herself from the Middlesex Hospital in time to catch the 1.39pm performance of Paisa at the Academy Cinema. The film had received mixed reviews; the critics felt its formal beauty was marred by its anti-British sentiments, particularly the scene in which two British officers discuss architectural history whilst partisans die within view. Mum loved it and my birth occurred without too much distress later that evening. I have always thought she looks a little like Ingrid Bergman in this photograph.
